Dr M downsizes cabinet

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that the cabinet size will be reduced from 35 to a maximum of 30 ministers.

He also moved to shore up investor confidence ahead of markets opening.

Daim Zainuddin, who leads the Council of Eminent Persons, gave his assurance to the people that the abolition of the goods and services tax and reinstating fuel subsidies will not adversely affect the economy.

He also stressed that Putrajaya will not increase its debt further.

The Council of Eminent Persons will also set up a special task force on 1MDB.

Former inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said he was ready to be investigated on the 1MDB matter.

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the home minister-designate, instructed newly-minted Johor Menteri Besar Osman Sapian to correct his refusal to recognise the state opposition.

PKR's reservations on cabinet discussion

PKR representatives were absent during the discussion on cabinet appointments.

PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali said it was not a boycott as the party merely wanted PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to be involved in the talks.

Anwar, in a meeting with Mahathir at Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital, relayed PKR's concerns and the need to be inclusive in negotiations.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli denied the report by Sin Chew Daily that he spoke out about the cabinet appointments because he wanted to be finance minister, stating that he had made it clear that he did not want any government position.

Former minister Rais Yatim warned that Harapan may become a second BN if it accepted defections from from the former ruling coalition.

Cops keep eye on Najib's house

Police have cordoned off the entrance to former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's house.

The police also also denied raiding apartments linked to Najib, stating that they had merely checked on CCTV footages.

Gerakan Youth deputy chief Andy Yong said he was not defending Najib but stressed that he should not be arbitrarily blacklisted by the Immigration Department.

AirAsia group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes apologised for buckling under pressure when he was forced to campaign for BN in the last general election.

AirAsia X chairperson Rafidah Aziz said Fernandes had refused her resignation despite the then BN government becoming upset with her criticisim of the government.

The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) said it will commence an investigation into Fernandes' claimed that the commission ordered him to cancel extra flights he introduced for the 14th general election.
