Dr M takes on education portfolio

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad announced that he will take on the education portfolio in the Pakatan Harapan cabinet, as there "are many uneducated people in the country."

Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang took to Twitter to remind Mahathir of Harapan's 'promise' in the manifesto, that the prime minister will not hold any other portfolio than the premiership.

Several Harapan leaders alerted by Malaysiakini were also in the dark about the matter, saying they thought that Mahathir cannot only hold the finance minister's post, and said will alert him of the discrepancy.

Meanwhile, the Langkawi police arrested a man who allegedly insulted Mahathir and Islam, on Facebook.

Lawyers and politicians alike slammed the police over the arrest, calling it "overzealous" and a waste of police resources.

Najib ready to face 'God's test' amid raids

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak broke fast on the first day of Ramadhan with his mother at her residence, amid ongoing police raids at his house in Jalan Duta. An aide said he's ready to face God's test in the matter.

Najib's lawyer Harpal Singh Grewal said cops are attempting to drill through a safe in Najib's house, which has been locked for "two decades" due to lost key.

Former minister under Najib's administration, Abdul Rahman Dahlan, tweeted that there are more humane ways to probe Najib than conduct night raids, as "he is ex-PM after all."

Earlier, Harapan MPs Nurul Izzah and Khalid Samad also questioned the need for police night raids, being former victims of "dawn raids" themselves.

PM Mahathir, meanwhile, denied the intention to "torture" anyone with the night raid, saying the police were following their standard operating procedures.

Swiss-based NGO Bruno Manser Fund said it is willing to share evidence on the alleged corruption involving Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud with the Pakatan Harapan government.
