MACC targets Azeez, report claims another massive cash haul

After police raids at residences linked to former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak netted a massive haul of cash, MACC has now reportedly seized RM500,000 in cash and RM1.2 million in various currencies from the homes of Umno supreme council member Azeez Abdul Rahim.

Speaking to Malaysiakini earlier, the Tabung Haji chairperson confirmed the raids at his office and homes in Kedah and Selangor, but was in the dark about the amount seized.

“Maybe there was some money…I need to check because I wasn’t at home in Baling. I will check and get back to you," Azeez said.

The Baling MP, who claimed to be in the dark over the purpose of the raid, pledged full cooperation with regard to the investigation.

“Of course (I will cooperate). But they didn’t say whether they are going to call me or anything,” he said.

Later, Azeez was quoted by Star Online as stating: “They only took RM500,000 and that was from my Baling Umno allocation and about seven pieces of my wife’s jewellery.

“The jewellery has been with us for more than 30 years since our marriage and I guess it’s worth around RM50,000. My wife is not a jewellery person lah.”

Meanwhile, Bernama, which quoted a source, reported that the simultaneous raids at 12.30pm were to facilitate an investigation into the appointment of contractors involving Tabung Haji projects.

The case is being investigated under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009 pertaining to soliciting/receiving gratification.

Quoting a source, Astro Awani reported that there were 20 various currencies seized, which after conversion amounted to RM1.2 million.

This included taka (Bangladesh), rufiya (Maldives), riyal (Arab Saudi) and pound sterling.

The report claimed that MACC also confiscated 20 watches.
