Development for Highland Towers area under study

A special committee will be formed to implement a feasibility study on redevelopment of the abandoned site at Highland Towers.

Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin said the ruins at the site had become an eyesore and a concern for neighbours.

“The site is now a nest for drug addicts and thieves,” she told a press conference at her ministry in Putrajaya today.

Zuraida, who is also Ampang member of parliament said the ministry hoped to rebuild the Highland Towers site, a premium property that was struck by tragedy 25 years ago.

On Dec 11, 1993, one of the three blocks of Highland Towers Condominium at Taman Hillview, Ulu Klang collapsed, killing 48 people.

Zuraida also said her ministry would hold discussions with the Ministry of Finance and Bank Negara for relaxation of the credit rating to resolve the high percentage of housing loan rejections for the B40 and M40 groups.

"We will likely hold the discussions after Aidilfitri; we need to consider the groups’ second and third incomes for inclusion in their housing loan applications," she said. - Bernama
