Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has mooted Malaysia as a neutral ground for the ongoing trade spat between the US and China.

In light of the “quarrel” between the two economic powerhouses, he said Malaysia could serve as an intermediary for trade between them.

“I hope that if the US wants to export to China, they can export through Malaysia.

“And if the Chinese want to export to America, they can produce (items) here, we can put the “Made in Malaysia” label (on them).

“So everything that happens, whether good or bad, presents new opportunities for those who can see through the problems,” he said during his speech when opening the American Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting (above) in Kuala Lumpur today.

Among the 240 in the audience were executives from American blue chips Deloitte, West Digital, JP Morgan, AmMet Life and Citibank.

Earlier this month, US president Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Chinese imports after Beijing decided to raise its tariffs on US goods.

The trade spat has caused financial markets to respond negatively.
