The pre-trial proceedings against Najib Abdul Razak drew a large number of spectators including graphic designer Mohd Fahmi Reza Mohd Zarin, who was previously charged in court for his caricature of the former prime minister as an evil clown.

“Perhaps, finally, he can understand what I had to go through during his reign,” Fahmi told reporters outside the courtroom.

Fahmi, 41, was regularly arrested by the police for his artwork during Najib's tenure.

In February, he was fined RM30,000 by the Sessions Court over the Najib clown caricature which he uploaded online.

Fahmi told reporters today that he was not out for revenge.

“I am here today because I’ve been following this matter closely. I want to witness (the proceedings) as an interested citizen. I want to see if there will be justice.

“We want all those who are corrupt to face justice,” he said.

Fahmi said charging Najib was the first step towards ensuring justice in the country but there was still a long road ahead.

“The struggle is not over. Justice has yet to be served. We cannot cheer just yet,” he said.

Najib has claimed trial to one count of abusing his power as a public servant in receiving gratification amounting to RM42 million.

He also faces three counts of criminal breach of trust over the same matter.

For each charge, he can be jailed up to 20 years.
