Lim Kit Siang has disagreed with former Johor menteri besar Mohamed Khaled Nordin's statement that it is Najib Abdul Razak, and not Umno, who is on trial.
On the contrary, the DAP veteran said all Umno and BN leaders who helped the former premier cover up the 1MDB scandal are on trial.
“This would include all the ministers in the Najib cabinet, the Umno/BN MPs of the 13th Parliament as well as the leaders of Umno and BN parties,” he added in a statement this afternoon.
Lim also recalled the US Department of Justice's civil forfeiture suits related to 1MDB in July 2016, and how the former premier was described as “Malaysian Official 1 (MO1)”.
“Any self-respecting, honest and patriotic prime minister would have issued a point-by-point rebuttal in his own country without even recourse to any foreign court to establish not only his own innocence but refute the allegation that Malaysia had become a global kleptocracy.
“This was not done, and all those in the cabinet, parliament and Umno/BN leadership positions, at least from July 2016 to May 2018, who had aided and abetted Najib in covering up the 1MDB kleptocracy, had done a great injustice, wrong and disservice akin to treachery to Malaysia and they are all, together with Najib, on trial,” he added.
Lim also said Najib has not shown remorse nor contrition for the 1MDB scandal.
“When will Umno and BN ministers, MPs and leaders who aided and abetted the cover-up...show proper remorse and contrition for the 1MDB kleptocracy?” he asked.
In a statement yesterday, Khaled, who is also Umno vice-president, said the party cannot reform if Najib continues to play a significant role.
He was among a slew of Umno leaders who have fired salvos at their former president over the past two days.
