Religion should not be used as a platform to target others for political gain, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mujahid Yusof Rawa said today.

“Religion should be free from politics, including sermons delivered on the podiums of the mosques. Religious should be free from all (trappings), because it is higher than everything,” he told the media today at KLIA.

Mujahid, the de facto religious affairs minister, was asked to comment on Kelantan Amanah's allegation that PAS had used its Aidiladha sermon to slander the Pakatan Harapan government.

Kelantan Amanah vice-chief Che Ibrahim Mohamed claimed yesterday that a sermon issued by Kelantan PAS' ulama wing sowed hatred towards the federal government by “using religious sentiments in the wrong manner.”

The sermon had purportedly blamed Harapan for "legalising (menghalalkan) LGBT.”

Mujahid said sermons should be directed at goodness, instead of being used to label others because of differences in political views.

“The (sermons) should call people to do good, be aimed towards nation-building, and more importantly, avoid labelling groups that have differing political views, or worse, spread slander that is untrue, out of political interests.

“Indeed, this has been my advice since the beginning when I was appointed as a minister, to ask that religion not be politicised."

Mujahid said he has just returned from Mecca and had been spending his time in spiritual pursuit, and would address the matter further when he returns to work to weigh what actions would be necessary.

PAS has taken to criticising Mujahid and Harapan for taking a relatively reconciliatory stand towards the LGBT community.
