Institutional Reform Committee (IRC) member Ambiga Sreenevasan wants the group's report, which was submitted to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, to be made public.

She said this would allow the people to discuss the committee's suggestions and recommendations to the government.

“Well. You know what, I think the more the public ask for it, the better. I think there need to be calls from the public as well,” she told reporters in Petaling Jaya this morning.

Previously, another committee member, Mah Weng Kwai, made a similar call.

The report contains recommendations for reforming Parliament, elections, the judiciary, law officers and the legal service, anti-corruption agencies, police and immigration forces, communications media and information as well as human rights.

The IRC was formed shortly after the May 9 election to complement the Council of Eminent Persons on matters of institutional reform.

In the production of its report, the committee met with many civil society organisations and reviewed more than 1,000 written submissions from the public.

Apart from Ambiga and Mah, the committee also comprised Universiti Malaya law professor Shad Saleem Faruqi and Persatuan Patriot Kebangsaan president Mohd Arshad Raji. The IRC was chaired by Court of Appeal judge KC Vohrah.

Ambiga confirmed that the report also focused on the issue of custodial deaths, but she declined to reveal details when asked about the recommendations.
