After having a total of 32 1MDB-related charges slapped against former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak so far, MACC deputy chief commissioner (Operations) Azam Baki is not ruling out that there will be more charges to come.

“We do not deny that there will be further charges,” he told reporters outside the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex today when asked.

He gave a similar response when asked whether there would be charges brought against Najib’s wife Rosmah Mansor.

Asked if investigations were still ongoing, Azam responded in the affirmative.

“There are still investigation papers with the police and the MACC especially in relation to asset tracing of 1MDB proceeds that have gone overseas,” he said.

Najib was charged with 25 offences today of which four are under the MACC Act 2009 and 21 are under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

These are in relation to accusations that he had abused his position as finance minister and prime minister and supposedly received funds that originated from 1MDB.

'Predicate offences'

Azam said the MACC and the police had conducted joint investigations before but this the first time both agencies have jointly brought charges.

He said MACC had conducted investigations on the offences of abuse of power while the police had probed Najib for laundering the proceeds of the alleged crime.

“So investigation on this started from (an MACC) report. That is what we call predicate offences.

“From then on money laundering (investigation) files were opened. That’s why the prosecutor joined these two cases and they will be tried together,” he explained.
