Yoursay: If public land has to be sold, make it transparent

YOURSAY | ‘Land sold to developers, for instance, has to be on stringent conditions…’

This land is our land, not for privatisation

Eric C2: Is this the best Pakatan Harapan can offer us? Selling what we have instead of finding some solid idea to raise money, or move against those who stole all the money in the first place?

Let there be a witch hunt – let’s kill two birds with one stone. Jail all of those who stole from the country, and monetise their assets and those of anyone else connected to them.

Of course, discretion must be used, but clearly this will net the country a large amount of cash. What are we waiting for?

There is a public appetite for stern action and Harapan must strike while the iron is hot.

Siti Baldishah: PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad, you asked us to give us our best effort to return you to power. And we did – many, many Malaysians went out of their way to make this happen.

Please don’t sell our public land.

BB123: Without reducing the debt, all our budget will go to servicing it. Does that make sense? Selling assets is the price we have to pay, otherwise the burden of servicing the debt will be even greater.

Kamaru: What's wrong with government privatising state land to build houses or factories for Malaysians? Keeping land idle makes no economic sense.

Frank Auger: We do not have to sell our land to foreigners to raise money. Instead, we should convert leasehold land to freehold and pay the premium to raise funds.

This means Malaysians do not have to lose their land to foreigners.

Anonymous_1399778124: Kudos to Kua Kia Soong. Point well made, and should be received in the right spirit by the Harapan government.

Any privatisation under today's adverse and extreme circumstances must be transparent and people-centric. It's the people's land, after all.

Whatever measures taken must not only resolve the government's dilemma, but it must also benefit all parties.

If the land is sold to developers, for instance, it has to be with stringent conditions where clear benefits will cascade and be enjoyed by the people.

Don't say ‘no’ blindly. Land is a factor of production. Talk about planned and efficacious land use instead.

Pua chides Straits Times for 'persistently misreporting' on 1MDB

Ferdtan: Remember that it was alleged that the Straits Times interview with Xavier Justo was scripted by PetroSaudi International, although it has been denied by the paper.

Also, since attorney-general Tommy Thomas is overseeing discussions with Abu Dhabi-based International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) on the 1MDB settlement, we must be aggressive in pursuing United Arab Emirates officials – according to "Billion Dollar Whale", they were actively involved with fugitive financier Low Taek Jho in defrauding 1MDB and Malaysia.

Fellow Malaysian: "Billion Dollar Whale" authors Tom Wright and Bradley Hope have written critically about Singapore's banks allegedly harbouring illicit and tainted laundered money from many politically-connected individuals from other Asean countries, and treating the island as Asia's equivalent of the British Virgin Islands.

Why has the Singapore government remained silent when this major allegation was levelled against the island republic's banking industry?

Robbed: Perhaps the Straits Times should forget about 1MDB, and focus on town council management software being sold to a S$2 dollar company, Temasek Holdings’ losses, as well as their sorry ranking in the Press Freedom Index.

Anonymous_ac315d58: To all the people criticising Singapore on the 1MDB issue and talking about hidden agendas, don't forget the country is the first and only one that has put 1MDB-linked criminals behind bars.

It has also fined major banks and shut down BSI Bank Singapore.

Police, gov't apply to strike out Umno suit on seized RM116.7m

Tongue, Teeth and Fingers: Umno is asking Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Amar Singh to produce a rough diagram of where the seized RM116.7 million was hidden?

Excuse me for sounding dumb, but they just said they themselves hid the funds in Pavilion Residences.

Anonymous 19811504508400: If the money belongs to Umno, surely the most secure place would have been a bank account?

Is it not super stupid to keep so much cash in a building, unless, of course, the source of the money is a little dodgy?

Roger 5201: This is ludicrous. Police accused of robbing Umno of RM116.7 million in cash of various denominations in Najib's ‘safekeeping’?

The ex-president must show his audit trail of Umno monies coming in and out of his safe, from the day former president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi handed over the party war chest to him.

Simple Malaysian: Let’s see what Umno has to say as to the source of these funds and how it moved from its own accounts in the form of cash to Najib. I am really curious. Can we prepare the popcorn now?

Anonymous_f16012da: Demand the claimant produce party accounts and show all documents, such as official receipts to donors, expenses incurred and payment vouchers. Otherwise, shaft this claim into the toilet bowl.
