Hishammuddin Hussein today stressed that he did not offer to track down fugitive financier Low Taek Jho in China to evade the scrutiny of the MACC.

The former defence minister said that he was confident that the graft-busting agency has no cause to investigate him as he was not involved in any act of corruption. 

"What does the MACC have against me? I am not corrupt.

"If they want to investigate, how come the MACC has yet to call me (for questioning)?

"In this case, I'm not bothered about what the people say. Let the MACC themselves reveal if they have anything against me," Hishammuddin told reporters at Parliament's lobby today.

Last week, Hishammuddin volunteered to go "all out" to trace the 1MDB-linked businessperson in China and bring him back to face justice, as he wants to see closure on the 1MDB case.

He stressed that the offer was made in his personal capacity, and not on Putrajaya's request.

The offer was met with mixed responses, with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad saying that it would be welcome, and some of Hishammuddin's fellow lawmakers from Umno questioning the move.

Info will be channelled to IGP

Hishammuddin said that any information he obtained on Low's whereabouts would be channelled to inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

"He (Fuzi) has also previously said that he would welcome my personal efforts to assist investigations against Low," said the Sembrong MP.

Hishammuddin explained, however, that he has as yet not found the time to go to China to hunt down the fugitive. 

"I don't have time now, but I have already informed my friends in China about the matter.

"But I don't know whether Low is still in China or not. If he is still in China, why have the Chinese authorities not handed him to us?

"I have been made to understand that our police has established a good connection with their counterparts there."

Hishammuddin also reiterated that any trip to China will be made in his personal capacity, with expenses paid out of his own pocket.

"If we look into the future, there has to be a closure to the 1MDB controversy.

"If everyone agrees that Low is critical to solving the issue, I'm willing to help, personally, and I will fund it," he stressed.

On July 5, it was confirmed that Low had fled to Macau. He left the gambling haven six days later for an unspecified location.

An arrest warrant against Low and his father was issued on Aug 5 to enable both to be repatriated and face money-laundering charges in relation to 1MDB.

The warrant was obtained after charges were filed at the Putrajaya Sessions Court in accordance with Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001.
