The Election Commission will analyse the controversial redelineation exercise during the previous BN administration and assess if this was carried out in a fair and constitutional manner, said its chairperson Azhar Harun.

He said the Federal Constitution barred a new exercise for the next eight years.

“We can't have a redelineation exercise again [...] but what I want to do is analyse the exercise that was done before the 14th general election.

“We want to offer an opinion on it, whether the redelineation was fair and whether it followed what was stipulated in the 13th Schedule of the Federal Constitution.

“If we find that it was not fair and did not follow the constitution, I would like to come out with a proposal on how the ideal process should have been. But it's just a proposal, not a redelineation exercise,” he told a press conference at the EC headquarters in Putrajaya this afternoon.

Azhar said a committee would be set up to study the previous exercise while views from academics and statisticians would be sought.

Passed two months before GE14, the electoral boundaries that resulted from the previous redelineation exercise were criticised for being in favour of the then-ruling BN. 

Bersih, along with Pakatan Harapan politicians, had protested outside Parliament against the exercise, accusing the then EC of “cheating”. 

The Bar Council had also criticised the exercise as being “flawed, unfair and unconstitutional”.  

Redelineation was among the issues discussed with the 30 political parties Azhar met with today.
