Some 300 delegates at the PKR Youth congress in Shah Alam were stunned when a visibly emotional Dr Afif Bahardin ripped a leaflet on stage and demanded that the party review its election process.

The leaftet was the “cai” (the Chinese word for menu, which was distributed to guide voters) featuring incumbent vice-president Rafizi Ramli and candidates aligned to him.

Afif, who failed in his bid to win the PKR Youth chief post against Akmal Nasir from Rafizi's team, said members became disinterested in the candidates' manifestoes after a week and voting was based on the “cai” which was circulated.

"This was what we upheld for the past nine weeks (of voting). There were no longer talks about idealism, who does the work or otherwise or who is qualified or not.

"These leaflets were brought into (the voting centres) and placed on the table.

"This is how fragile the value of PKR's future is,” he added as he tore the leaflet.

Earlier, Afif stressed that he did not dispute the outcome of the election but argued that the process was flawed.

“The election (period) is long, nine weeks. It almost broke my back," he added.

The Penang state exco member said the election process was not conducive for those who held government posts or were elected representatives.

"As such, I urge a review of the election process. I believe the sentiment is shared by many.

"I want us to humbly admit there is a flaw in the system," added the Seberang Jaya assemblyperson during the winding up debates this evening.

Afif said it is pertinent for PKR to acknowledge the flaw in the polling process as its membership continues to grow.

"I am worried, as we have some 800,000 members today. But when (PKR president) Anwar Ibrahim becomes the prime minister, I am confident that members will be above 1.6 million nationwide.

"How many years would we need to complete the election process then?" he asked.

Rafizi, on the other hand, had mounted an unsuccessful challenge against incumbent deputy president Azmin Ali.
