Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has not received any official correspondence that Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V would abdicate.

Quizzed on whether the ruler has resumed his duties, Mahathir replied: “As far as I know.”

Speaking to reporters after chairing a Pakatan Harapan presidential council meeting in Kuala Lumpur today, the premier, however, declined to comment further on the claims regarding the abdication.

“Like you, I have heard rumours. I didn't receive letters or official indication about anything, so I am not going to talk about (it),” he said.

Yesterday, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the state government has no knowledge of the abdication claim but advised the people not to believe rumours.

Mohd Amar added that the Agong had taken a two-month leave for health reasons.

The Kelantan ruler was installed as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on April 24, 2017.

In his absence, the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, exercised the functions of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong from Nov 2 to Dec 31 last year.

Previously, speculation was rife that Sultan Muhammad V, 49, had married former Russian beauty queen Oksana Voevodina in Moscow on Nov 22.

When previously questioned on this, Mahathir had claimed to be in the dark.

“I don’t know. I don’t have any official confirmation so I can’t say anything,” he had said.
