Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will brief lawmakers tomorrow on the constitutional amendment to lower the minimum voting age to 18, according to PAS MP Takiyuddin Hassan.
"We will wait and see," he said, responding to a question if PAS would back the amendment since the government has agreed to include the opposition's request for automatic voter registration and lowering the age of electoral candidates to 18.
Speaking to reporters at the Parliament lobby this morning, Takiyuddin said the opposition would only vote for the constitutional amendment if the government is able to amend the other two conditions before the bill is tabled for its second reading in the Dewan Rakyat.
"If the amendment is done, we will vote for the bill," added the Kota Bahru MP.
The constitutional bill on lowering the voting age to 18 will be tabled for its second reading on July 16.
On the same day the government tabled the constitutional amendment on lowering the voting age, the opposition - BN, PAS and GPS - outlined these two conditions.
When met at the Parliament lobby this afternoon, Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa said BN lawmakers would support the amendment if both conditions are included in part of the bill when tabling it for the second reading.
"They can add these additional amendments (automatic voter registration and lowering the age of electoral candidates to 18) in the bill before the debate (at the policy stage)," Annuar said.
Only then, he said, the opposition would have no qualms about supporting the bill.
