In their Deepavali messages to the people, top Pakatan Harapan leaders have called on Malaysians to overcome attempts to divide them.

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim stressed the need to prioritise overcoming poverty and not be distracted by messages of division.

"As the government of the day, we are firm in our commitment to justice and fairness as well as efforts to create an economy that serves all, including Indian Malaysians who are still plagued by poverty.

"I am confident that this focus and narrative will continue.

"At the same time, we are fed with racial rhetoric that is, day by day, affecting everyone," he said in a Facebook post.

However, Anwar said Malaysians must overcome this.

"To face this, everyone, regardless of race or background, must set aside this distraction. I also believe Malaysians are matured and sensitive people who can set aside trivial differences and work together for the good of all," he said.

He stressed that if Malaysia wanted to move ahead, then it must correct its priorities.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is also the Pakatan Harapan and Bersatu chairperson, also spoke about attempts to divide Malaysians and stressed on the importance of tolerance.

"We are aware that there are unhealthy elements that can threaten national harmony. However, we believe that they only comprise a small group of people and the majority of Malaysians are matured and rational," he said.

Mahathir added that such a spirit is derived from a love for the country.

"This attitude is guided by our love for our country. This is our country and there is none as unique as Malaysia, " he said.
