Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said with the huge changes taking place in the world today, respect for traditional values such as the institution of marriage has eroded, giving rise to same-sex marriage.
He said the world is going through tremendous changes and the value system has been so eroded in western countries that nothing is respected any more.
"Everything that was considered sinful now is accepted as the right thing to do.
"We find many Muslims who are attracted to this new culture, who do not respect the values we have been taught to respect," Mahathir (above) said at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya today.
He said this when speaking at the opening of the Kuala Lumpur summit, while touching on culture and identity, which is one of the seven main themes of the summit.
The Kuala Lumpur summit is an international platform for dialogue that brings together Muslim leaders and scholars to discuss and reach solutions to the problems faced by Muslims in the world today.
Mahathir told the audience that marriage is no longer about a man and a woman and raising children to establish a family.
"Today marriage is not respected.
"There could even be marriage between man and man, woman and woman and there will be no offsprings regularly, but the adoptions of other people's offspring would be regarded as legitimate and a part of a family," he said.
"We must learn to our own culture and uphold it. We must know our own identity and be proud of it," he said.
Mahathir criticism of LGBT rights and same-sex marriage echoes his remarks earlier this year at the Cambridge Union when he claimed there was still pressure for Malaysia to accept the LGBT lifestyle.
“That’s how they (the West) exert their pressure and they managed to influence some Malaysians, including some Muslims and Malays who think that one of the manifestations of freedom is the right to accept what is practised in the West.
