Married under MCO, first M'sian couple chose Jawi's online video option

The Covid-19 outbreak has seen many couples putting a hold on their wedding plans, but not so for two 29-year-olds Muhammad Don Haadi Don Putra and Nahdatul Aishah Mohd Sharif.
This morning, they became the first couple in Malaysia to be united via online video conferencing - taking advantage of a leeway granted by the Federal Territories Religious Department (Jawi) since April 17 on weddings during the movement control order (MCO).
The solemnisation ceremony held from the couple's family homes in Setapak and Setiawangsa was also streamed live on Al-Hijrah channel.
Unlike a typical ceremony, Muhammad Don was seen to be seated in his own living room, accompanied by family members, while Nahdatul Aisyah was accompanied by her own parents, as well as special guests de facto Religious Affairs Minister Zulkifli Mohamad and Jawi director Mohd Ajib Ismail.
Muhammad Don responded to recitation of the marriage vows by Nahdatul Aisyah's father Mohd Sharif Khamis, who acted as her guardian, and this was accepted by the mandatory witnesses also gathered at the bride's house.
Among countries which have introduced Muslim online marriage ceremonies following the Covid-19 outbreak include the United Arab Emirates.
