No 'balik kampung' allowed - security minister

CORONAVIRUS | Malaysians are not allowed to leave the cities unless they are students, said Senior Minister (security cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaakob today.

Clarifying his call for those to register their intended travel plans with the authorities yesterday, Ismail said this was limited only to those currently stranded outside their usual residences.

"For those in the cities who wish to 'balik kampung', that is not allowed," he said.

Ismail said registration of travel away from rural areas were only allowed for those who are currently stranded for more than a month.

He said even after performing the registrations, there was no guarantee that the applicant would be automatically allowed to travel.

"Once we collect the data (on the volume and nature of travel), we will hand it to the Health Ministry, police and National Security Council for further discussions," he said.

Travel registration will be received through the Gerak Malaysia smartphone application or any police stations beginning April 25.

Ismail said ongoing plans to return tertiary institution students to their homes was a different matter because the government knew of their numbers and that they had undergone more than a month of quarantine.

"We don't have exact information about others who wish to travel.

"If a family of five wish to travel, should that be allowed? A lot of things need to be studied," he said.
