Mahathir: Maybe Muhyiddin has Umno ‘sickness’, likes to flout rules

Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad has launched yet another jab at rival Muhyiddin Yassin, accusing the party president of flouting the Bersatu constitution.
In a video today, Mahathir outlined the many “wrongs” he claimed Muhyiddin and his supporters had committed.

Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad has launched yet another jab at rival Muhyiddin Yassin, accusing the party president of flouting the Bersatu constitution.
In a video today, Mahathir outlined the many “wrongs” he claimed Muhyiddin and his supporters had committed.
This included announcing a supreme council meeting without his knowledge and not inviting him or his son - Bersatu deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir - to the said meeting.
Speculation is that the supreme council intends to sack the father-and-son duo.
Mahathir stressed that such meetings could only be called by him as the party chairperson.
“They did not (want to) let me attend or let me speak (at the meeting). This is a big mistake.
“This is why I find that maybe Muhyiddin has been infected by the Umno ‘sickness’ because he likes to do things without adhering to the party constitution,” he said
At this point, the video showed an article about the Umno Supreme Council’s move to suspend Shafie Apdal and sack Muhyiddin and Mukhriz from the party back in 2016.
Wrong to appoint Hamzah
Mahathir said Muhyiddin had also erred by appointing Hamzah Zainudin as the party’s secretary-general.
Not only was the move not discussed with him as required by the party constitution, he said the appointment went against a supreme council decision to bar former Umno members from holding any party positions should they be accepted into Bersatu.
“So it is the wrong thing to do.
“But Muhyiddin still insists on calling Hamzah the party secretary-general,” he said, stressing that Marzuki Yahaya was the rightful person for the role.
Hamzah quit Umno in December 2018 and joined Bersatu in February 2019. He was made the party’s secretary-general on March 26 this year.
Muhyiddin trying to win support
In today’s video, Mahathir alleged that Muhyiddin was flouting the rules in order to secure more support as prime minister.
He accused Muhyiddin of offering his supporters “positions”, also in an attempt to win support.
At this point, the video showed an article of Maszlee Malik being appointed as the Mara Corp advisory committee chairperson, a position the Simpang Renggam MP later turned down.
Mahathir, who has filed a no-confidence motion against Muhyiddin, reiterated that the PM’s popularity ought to be tested in the Dewan Rakyat.
He also reiterated his concern that Muhyiddin was leading the party they founded together to ruin.
“I am very sad about what has happened because Muhyiddin and I set up Bersatu together.
“What Muhyiddin is doing now will destroy Bersatu.
“Because if an election is called today [...] we will not get any support from Pakatan Harapan or from the party that lost (in GE14), which is Umno,” he said.
