CORONAVIRUS | The government will now allow postgraduate students to resume research activities on campus.
However, according to Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, this will be limited to students with research requiring them to conduct work at a laboratory, design workshop and studio, or if they need to use specific instruments.
“The special ministers’ meeting yesterday discussed the Higher Education Ministry's proposal on academic activities in institutes of higher learning during and after the (movement control order) MCO. The meeting decided to approve research activities for postgraduate students such as masters or PhD, as soon as possible.
“This will involve some 31,503 students in 462 institutes of higher learning... an estimated 60 students per institute. So this is not a high number,” he said during his daily press conference in Putrajaya today.
Apart from this allowance, he reiterated that schools of all levels are still not permitted to reopen.
He said this to a question on calls by certain private schools to be allowed to do so during the conditional MCO period.
“Schools are included in the list of forbidden activities. This encompasses (all schools), including national secondary schools, private primary and secondary schools, and even international schools.
“If there is any report (of schools being reopened), the Education Ministry will investigate and the schools will be ordered closed,” he said.
Similarly, he said all entertainments outlets including pubs and night clubs are not allowed to resume operations at this time.
He said that there would be “no compromise” on this matter and local councils would take action to close any such centres found to be operating during the order period.
