National broadcasting station RTM also joined in the back-to-school cheer. In a lighthearted gimmick, its news and Selamat Pagi Malaysia team showed up for work yesterday, on-air, garbed in the light blue, white, black, or dark green of the national secondary school uniforms.
They included newscasters, journalists, and crew. At least one of its reporters, Siti Farah Nadia Fadzlon, went to the ground at a tahfiz school in Shah Alam, in uniform, for her coverage of the new normal practices at schools.
RTM director-general of broadcasting Nor Yahati Awang, in a social media post yesterday, said the move was in support of teachers and students who returned to the classrooms.
She said both RTM news staff and the Selamat Pagi Malaysia team at the main headquarters at Angkasapuri in Kuala Lumpur as well as the state offices also came to work dressed for secondary school.
According to Sin Chew, staff at RTM’s Chinese-language station Ai FM also donned uniforms.
The "cute" stunt was greeted with cheers from netizens, with Nor Yahati’s post being shared over a thousand times.
Several netizens commented that the move could inspire children to return to school while one said, as a teacher, she felt a sense of solidarity with RTM staff.
Schools were closed since the government-implemented movement control order (MCO) began on March 18, with students attending classes online instead.
However, under the recovery MCO, schools were permitted to reopen yesterday for students sitting for public examinations.
The reopening of other school levels will be conducted in stages during the recovery MCO, slated to end on Aug 31.
It was announced that pre-schools would reopen on July 1.
