CORONAVIRUS | The number of people known to have Covid-19 and could potentially infect others has reduced to 191, according to the Health Ministry.

The number of active Covid-19 cases reached a high of 2,959 on April 5.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry said there were six new Covid-19 cases detected in the 24-hour period ending noon today.

Of the six, four cases involved Malaysians returning from abroad while a case involved a foreigner who was allowed to enter Malaysia for work.

The remaining case involved a Malaysian who was tested at his workplace in Kuala Lumpur.

The total number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care remained at two. No new deaths were recorded.

Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah also noted that today marked the 19th day for which new Covid-19 case numbers were in the single digits.

He also noted that the recovery rate (96.4 percent) was among the highest in Asean while the deaths attributable to Covid-19 (1.41 percent) was among the lowest in the world.

"The statistics are encouraging and it will make (the government) more confident in opening up more sectors in an organised manner to boost the economy.

"The compliance of guidelines (to prevent the spread of Covid-19) by individuals, companies and the community has led to this achievement," said Noor Hisham.

However, he said Malaysia was not out of the woods yet and will have to continue observing all guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Noor Hisham also reminded Malaysians to observe social distancing, maintain proper hygiene and protect the elderly and the frail.
