UPDATED: Added Wangsa Maju police chief’s comments on tracking down suspect and victim.
The police are investigating the case of a Nepali security guard who was seen beaten repeatedly with a baton in a video that has been widely shared online.
When contacted, Wangsa Maju district police chief Supt Rajab Ahad Ismail confirmed that action was being taken.
“The suspect and victim are being identified,” he told Malaysiakini.
Rajab later issued a statement saying that the incident had taken place at a condominium along Jalan Madrasah in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur.
The suspect is believed to be a Pakistani national while the investigation is being done under Section 324 of the Penal Code (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means).
Those convicted under the section are liable to a maximum 10 years jail sentence or a fine or whipping or any two of the punishments.
Earlier today, the Nepali embassy has lodged a police report over the beating depicted in the video.
“The Embassy of Nepal, Kuala Lumpur notes with concern the recent video trending on social media regarding the assault of a security guard in Malaysia.
“A police report has been initiated for further investigations,” it said in a Facebook post this afternoon.
Members of the public with additional information on the incident can contact the embassy by email (eonkualalumpur@mofa.gov.np) or its hotline (016 247 2777).
A video timestamped July 7 recently made rounds online and showed a man grabbing and physically assaulting another man dressed in a security guard uniform.
Using what appears to be a baton, he repeatedly strikes the security guard’s back, arm and legs. He also slaps him across the face with his hand.
He continues beating the guard even as the latter backs away and attempts to shield himself.
"You main main ah? (Are you playing around?)
“You mari sini cari kerja ke cari masalah? "(Are you here to find work or find trouble?), the man is heard telling the guard.
Since it was uploaded to Facebook 14 hours ago, the video has garnered 437,000 views and 11,000 shares.
Separately, Security Industry Association Malaysia (PIKM) committee member for Nepalese security affairs Basant Singh Sidhu also lodged a report about the incident at the Sentul district police station this morning.
“The report was based on the viral video,” he told Malaysiakini, adding that he did not recognise the guard seen assaulted in the clip.
Tweeting the clip, migrant worker rights specialist Andy Hall said the abuse of security guards was a “systemic and widespread” problem.
Former Health Ministry deputy director-general Dr Christopher Lee also raised concern over the incident, calling on Twitter for the protection of migrant workers against abuse.
He hoped the authorities would take action against the perpetrator.
Meanwhile, Human Resources Minister M Saravanan posted the video on his official Facebook page and urged those with information on the perpetrator or incident to lodge a police report.
He said the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Abdul Hamid Bador had also been informed about the case.
“Please inform your nearest police station. I have informed the IGP about this.
“The fate of every worker in this country ought to be protected, regardless of whether they are a migrant worker or local worker,” Saravanan said.
