Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin urged the public to reject politicians who cause instability and negatively impact the government's economic recovery plan.
Though he did not mention names, his remarks came after PKR president Anwar Ibrahim claimed to have majority parliamentary support and would be forming a new government.
"What is needed is a stable and strong government that has your support, ladies and gentlemen.
"I plead with you to reject the haphazard actions of some politicians who want to affect the political stability and national economic recovery plan, that is being implemented smoothly at this moment," he said in a televised address this afternoon.
Anwar has not made clear who is backing him, saying this would only be revealed after his audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Meanwhile, Muhyiddin's ally, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, revealed that many Umno and BN MPs have voiced support for Anwar.
Zahid also reiterated that Umno and BN are not formally part of Perikatan Nasional.
In his speech today, Muhyiddin repeatedly stressed the need for unity.
He cited how lawmakers from both sides of the divide supported the government's bill to finance the Penjana economic recovery packages.
"Our future and fate in facing the challenges and impact of Covid-19 hinges on our unity, cooperation, between the federal government, state governments and our unit as Malaysians.
"If we don't work together, if we are divided in these trying times, then it is difficult for the government to achieve its critical goals to ensure the wellbeing of the people and the country," he said.
Muhyiddin added that the people should stand together with the PN government to helm the country through the current economic and health crisis.
