PM makes case for emergency and other news you may have missed

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are key headlines you may have missed, in brief.

1. Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin gave a televised address where he expressed his concern that the upcoming Batu Sapi by-election and the soon-to-be held Sarawak state election will cause a surge in Covid-19 cases and hence made his case for an emergency proclamation to delay those two events.

2. Muhyiddin also called for bipartisan support for his administration's Budget 2021 which will be tabled on Nov 6. Incidentally, his finance minister will be meeting opposition Pakatan Harapan MPs tomorrow on the Budget.

 3. Ahead of the meeting with Finance Minister Zafrul Abdul Aziz, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng mooted a "unity budget" in which RM31.4 billion should be allocated for employment schemes, unemployment benefits and a blanket loan repayment moratorium.

4. Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah today declined to reveal the reasons for issuing a RM1,000 compound on cabinet minister Khairuddin Aman Razali since the attorney-general found no case against him, and whether the fine would be rescinded.

5. Noor Hisham also explained how a person in Sarawak only tested positive for Covid-19 on the 18th day after her first test after returning from Labuan. He explained that the person was tested on the 10th day and developed symptoms on the 11th day, but hid it from authorities, and hence the person left quarantine undetected on the 14th day.

6. Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan urged the government to adopt an expansionary fiscal policy - a policy where the government spends more money - for Budget 2021 or risk irreversible economic damage.

7. Global Teacher Prize 2020 finalist Samuel Isaiah, who came to national attention for his work with Orang Asli communities in rural Pahang, hopes teachers get the help they need in order to go above and beyond in their profession.

8. A Selangor assemblyperson claimed his party Pejuang has yet to be registered due to bias by the Registrar of Societies (ROS). Jeram lawmaker Mohd Shaid Rosli said Perikatan Nasional's (PN) registration appeared to have been fast-tracked in contrast.
