Umno orders Perak chapter to keep PN govt intact

Umno's national leadership has ordered its Perak chapter to continue with a "Perikatan Nasional government".

"The current government exco should be maintained.

"Umno is also of the position that Bersatu and PAS should continue to support the PN government in Perak," Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said today.

The party was also of the view that the failed confidence vote on Ahmad Faizal Azumu's leadership as menteri besar today only involved that position.

"It does not change the status of the state government," Ahmad said.

Currently, Faizal is a caretaker menteri besar. It is speculated that there will be a new government soon.

Ahmad's statement came amidst speculation that there will be new political alignments in Perak, while PAS' official position is that it will not participate in a "new" state government.

Currently, the government of Perak comprises lawmakers from Bersatu, PAS, Umno and an independent.

In an immediate response, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the Bersatu political bureau at its meeting today expressed regret with the move to oust Faizal.

“Bersatu holds firm to principles of understanding and cooperation formed between PN component parties since earlier this year for the public's wellbeing and nation's prosperity.

"Bersatu will continue to monitor the current situation and will remain together with PAS and other PN colleagues in making the next decision," said Hamzah in a statement.

At the national level, Bersatu and PAS are part of the Perikatan Nasional coalition, while Umno heads the BN coalition.

PAS has a separate formal alliance with Umno, known as Muafakat Nasional.

With the Umno headquarters dictating that the "PN government" in Perak must be held intact, the situation in the state remains highly fluid.
