Zahid's position as Umno president 'increasingly untenable' - Khairy

Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin has reiterated his call for the Umno elections to be held early, saying party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's position has become "increasingly untenable".
He said this when commenting on a viral audio clip purportedly involving a recent conversation between Zahid and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Khairy urged the Umno supreme council to meet immediately and allow for the party elections to take place as soon as possible.
“I think many people in the party are very uncomfortable with the phone conversation purportedly between our party president and Anwar. Zahid's position, as far as I am concerned, is increasingly untenable and the best way to move on is to have a party election,” he said.
Khairy, who is also the Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, told reporters this after launching the Champs-Nasom Autism Awareness Campaign 2021 in Subang Jaya today.
The audio recording of a conversation between two individuals with voices resembling Zahid and Anwar, which allegedly took place after the Umno General Assembly last month, has been making its rounds on social media.
Meanwhile, Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin said it was best that the police be allowed to investigate the audio clip issue, adding that Zahid denied it was him in the recording and wanted to lodge a police report.
“They (party members) just want to know the truth. In politics, sometimes people just want to look for opportunities and all sorts of things can happen. If a police report is lodged, let the matter be investigated,” he told reporters at a ceremony to hand over incentives under the "e-kasih" welfare programme in Johor Bahru today.
To a question, Khaled said he heard the recording but would not want to comment on it.
“I have heard it but I’m not the police. I’m part of the top leadership; I have my own channels so I cannot give any reaction or comment,” he added.
