Two-week MCO in five Kedah districts
The National Security Council (NSC) has placed five areas in Kedah under a two-week movement control order (MCO) following a spike in Covid-19 cases there.
The five districts - Kota Setar, Kuala Muda, Bandar Baharu, Baling, and Kulim - will see tighter movement restrictions from tomorrow (May 1) until May 14.

The National Security Council (NSC) has placed five areas in Kedah under a two-week movement control order (MCO) following a spike in Covid-19 cases there.
The five districts - Kota Setar, Kuala Muda, Bandar Baharu, Baling, and Kulim - will see tighter movement restrictions from tomorrow (May 1) until May 14.
In a statement issued by Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob (above) today, he said the Health Ministry detected 709 active infections in those areas over the past fortnight.
“The implementation of this MCO is aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 from at-risk areas to other areas,” he said.
He added that as infectivity is on the rise, there is more concern about laboratory and hospital capacity in the state.
The rest of Kedah remains under the recovery MCO.
Ismail did not mention any standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the five districts under MCO. Malaysiakini has contacted the minister’s aide for more information.
SOPs are usually uploaded onto the NSC website.
The Health Ministry announced yesterday that the Jalan Adika Raja workplace cluster, originating from Hulu Perak, involved cases in Baling.
Three Ramadan bazaars in Kedah - two in Baling and one in Kulim - have been ordered to close.
Three more areas under lockdown
Ismail also announced that three more areas have been placed under enhanced MCO to allow for targeted testing.
Kampung Skim Cocos in Kunak, Sabah will be locked down from May 1 to May 14. This comes after eight cases were detected there from 186 tests.
SMK Madai in Kunak, Sabah will also be locked down from May 1 to May 14. This comes after 18 Covid-19 infections were detected from 185 tests.
Kampung Sagah along Jalan Sungai Tengah Matang in Kuching, Sarawak has also been placed under lockdown from May 1 to May 14. This comes after 17 cases were detected from 148 tests.
Meanwhile, the ongoing enhanced MCO in SM Sains Machang in Kelantan has been extended to May 14. The Health Ministry has detected 67 cases at the secondary school thus far and infectivity remains high. Results are also pending for 356 test samples.
Ismail said the enhanced MCO order has been lifted from the following five localities in East Malaysia:
- Taman Mesra Bako, Kuching, Sarawak
- Kampung Tengah, Betong, Sarawak
- Taman Hilltop, Tawau, Sabah
- Taman Bukit Bintang, Tawau, Sabah
- Taman Berkley, Tawau, Sabah
This comes after a drop in Covid-19 infections and after positive cases had been isolated and quarantined.
