The Conference of Rulers will hold a special meeting tomorrow afternoon to discuss various views raised by political party leaders who were recently granted royal audiences with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

In a statement today, Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the Agong met with 18 political leaders from June 9 until today.

He said other than political party leaders, the king also met with Arifin Zakaria, the chairperson of the Special Independent Committee on the Emergency at the palace today.

"In the audience sessions with political party leaders, His Majesty was pleased to hear their views on various issues," said Ahmad Fadil.

He added the meetings, held on of the king's initiative and concern, centred on efforts to fight the Covid-19 pandemic and how they were being carried out during the period of the emergency.

"Following the audience, the views put forward by the political party leaders will be raised at the special meeting of the Malay Rulers tomorrow, which will start at 2.30pm," he said.

"Apart from that, several experts from the government agencies are scheduled to give briefing on issues related to health, security, politics and national economy during the special meeting," he said.

All eyes have been on Istana Negara since last Monday as news broke out that the king had granted audience to the political leaders two months before the nationwide emergency is set to expire on Aug 1.

Last Thursday, former prime minister and Pejuang founder Dr Mahathir Mohamad revealed that he had mooted this idea when he was granted an audience by the Agong. He also offered his “services” for the new National Operation Council (NOC) if it is formed.

However, he said the Agong was of the opinion that such a proposal (NOC) should only come from the government.

So far, Pakatan Harapan has opposed Mahathir’s idea while Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the idea was not discussed when he was granted his audience with the Agong.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man says they had discussed “Covid-19 issues, the emergency and Parliament sitting”.

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he delivered his party’s stance that the current state of emergency should not continue after Aug 1 when he met the ruler last Friday.
