The government will begin allowing those aged above 60 years old to get their Covid-19 vaccine without an appointment.
The programme will start as a pilot in the Klang Valley and later expanded to the rest of the country, but conflicting announcements were made on when the programme will begin.
At a virtual press conference this evening, Health Minister Dr Adham Baba said senior citizens in the Klang Valley who have yet to be vaccinated may walk into a vaccine administration centre (PPV) to receive their vaccination.
“For those aged 60 and above and have yet to be vaccinated, we welcome that they come on a ‘walk-in’ basis in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.
“This begins immediately, meaning we can already supply vaccines to PPVs in the Klang Valley and offer them the vaccine,” he said.
CITF: Don’t come without an appointment
In a press release just hours later, however, the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) said the date of commencement of the programme will be announced later.
For the time being, it said those who do not have a vaccination appointment should not go to a PPV.
“This is to finalise the planning for the initiative, such as logistical matters and shipping vaccine stocks to all PPVs.
“Just as important is arranging the time for walk-in vaccinations to avoid congestion at PPVs, especially for senior citizens since the number of Covid-19 cases is getting higher,” it said.
As such, it said senior citizens and their chaperons who do not already have a vaccine appointment should not turn up at PPVs tomorrow until further details have been announced.
For the record, the government had started vaccinating the general population in the Klang Valley on June 21, after nearly all senior citizens who have registered for vaccination have already been vaccinated or given an appointment.
However, senior citizens who decide to register now will still receive priority in the vaccine queue.
