An operation for urgent vaccination in the Klang Valley will see all registered individuals aged 18 and above, in the area receiving at least their first dose by Aug 1.
The operation, dubbed Surge Capacity, will take place between July 26 and Aug 1, the minister in charge of coordinating the vaccination efforts, Khairy Jamaluddin, said.
He said as of July 15, 3.5 million people in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have already received their first dose and the remaining 2.6 million will get their first shot by August 1.
To achieve the target, he said PPVs in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor will have to administer 272,000 doses daily during the period of July 26 to August 1.
"I have discussed with the Selangor menteri besar and to ensure that this programme is successful, there needs to be a close working relationship between the state and federal government.
"To that end, we have agreed to appoint Bangi lawmaker Ong Kian Ming to be the coordinator of this programme in Selangor," he said.
After that, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor vaccine centres will be open for walk-ins to "mop up" the remainder adult population who were not registered or unrecorded, like undocumented migrants, he said.
As such, Khairy urged the remaining 11 percent of adults in the Klang Valley to register for vaccination as soon as possible.
In an immediate reaction, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said the state government is prepared to optimise its vaccine administering capacity subject to supplies received.
Among others he said the state will optimise its Selangor Vaccination (Selvax) Community and Industry programmes to reach 40,000 doses a day through five mega PPVs and Selcare panel clinics.
The operation comes as Covid-19 cases continue to surge unabated in the Klang Valley.
Today, 5,512 cases were recorded in Selangor while 1,542 cases were recorded in Kuala Lumpur. This is out of 12,541 reported nationwide.
