Construction worker dies in Bandar Bukit Tinggi LRT3 scaffolding collapse

A construction worker has died after iron scaffolding at the LRT3 construction site in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang collapsed this afternoon.
A stop-work order (SWO) has been issued pending an investigation into the cause of the incident.

A construction worker has died after iron scaffolding at the LRT3 construction site in Bandar Bukit Tinggi, Klang collapsed this afternoon.
A stop-work order (SWO) has been issued pending an investigation into the cause of the incident.
In a statement this evening, the contractor responsible for the affected stretch of construction apologised to the victims and the public.
Pembinaan Jaya Zira Sdn Bhd also characterised the incident as an “accident”.
“Five construction workers were involved during this construction accident.
“Four were rescued and one passed away.
“We are working with the Fire and Rescue Department and investigating the root cause of the incident. A SWO has been issued to halt all construction activities with immediate effect,” it said.
It added that it will take “full responsibility” for all expenses.
“We will take full responsibility for all the expenses relating to the repatriation of the construction worker’s remains and compensation to (his) loved ones, in addition to the medical costs for the three injured workers.
“We will liaise with the Bangladesh High Commission to handle all repatriation-related matters and fully cooperate with all the authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly,” it said.
The firm said the incident happened at about 2:41pm today.
The incident site is in front of a hotel along Jalan Langat in Bandar Bukit Tinggi.
The affected site is part of Work Package GS09.
Prasarana also probes
Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, the government-linked company that owns the LRT3 project, said it will also investigate the incident.
It further instructed LRT3 turnkey contractor MRCB George Kent to produce a “detailed report” along with “mitigation measures”.
“We firmly believe that safety is paramount and it requires attention and total commitment from all parties involved to ensure overall worksite safety is maintained and that we comply with safety regulations at all times.
“Prasarana will take appropriate action including to immediately launch our own probe into the matter as well as extending our full cooperation to the authorities to ensure a thorough and independent investigation is carried out,” it said in a separate statement.
Scaffolding gave way
Of the four who survived, three are Bangladeshi men while one is an Indonesian man. All sustained light injuries and are in their 30s.
Earlier, the Fire and Rescue Department said it had arrived at the scene at 2:58pm.
As of 3:30pm, efforts were still underway to rescue one more person who was buried beneath the rubble.
The person was eventually retrieved at 4:20pm but had died, Selangor Fire and Rescue Department chief Norazam Khamis reportedly said.
According to the New Straits Times, he told the media that the iron scaffolding gave way as workers poured wet cement into one of the columns.
Meanwhile, Klang Selatan district police chief Shamsul Amar Ramli told the media that the traffic congestion in the area was due to road closures following the incident.
