The Pakatan Harapan presidential council has assigned opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim on a mission to woo top opposition leaders to either bring their party into the coalition, or become allies.

Anwar will be meeting with the leaders soon, and will also iron out preparations for the forthcoming Parliament session and a possible vote on Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, as well as a replacement for deputy Dewan Rakyat speaker.

"Harapan's focus is to become an effective opposition," the presidential council said in a statement.

The statement was signed by Anwar, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.

The bid to unite the opposition follows Anwar's failed attempt to become prime minister after the opposition could only muster up 105 MPs.

Parti Sarawak Bersatu has rejected the offer to join Harapan - wanting to stay independent.

Meanwhile, Sabah's Warisan would likely want its president Shafie Apdal to lead the opposition instead.

As for Pejuang, it plans to contest 120 Parliament seats in the next election, which may put it into conflict with Harapan.

In its statement, the Harapan presidential council said among its focuses are institutional reforms, including on Parliament, Undi18, an anti-party hopping law and improving the National Recovery Plan.

Harapan said it would also consider Ismail's offer for the opposition to join a National Recovery Council, as well as a Covid-19 task force.

Anwar, Mohamad and Lim will be meeting Ismail today at the prime minister's office.
