A Malaysian on death row in Singapore, P Pannir Selvam, has launched his second single with the help of NGO Sebaran Kasih.
The song titled Bukan Sekadar Hikayat was written by Pannir (above) who is in Singapore’s Changi prison for trafficking 51.84g of diamorphine.
He was convicted on June 27, 2017, by the Singapore High Court, and initially scheduled for execution on May 24 last year.
Since then, legal processes are ongoing to challenge the dismissal of his clemency application.
His new song, sung by local rapper Saint TFC, aimed to remember the service of our country’s fighters who fought for the prosperity that Malaysians experience today.
Pannir's first song titled Arah Tuju - sung by Santesh Kumar and launched earlier this year - targeted youths with a message to avoid being involved in situations that could lead to being on death row.
Sebaran Kasih president Angelia Pranthaman said apart from helping a Malaysian who wanted to express his love for the country, the project also aimed to open the eyes of the community about the plight of Pannir and other death row inmates.
"We hope this song will be able to unite all Malaysians to share their love and appreciation for this country.
"At the same time, we also invite the public to reflect on the plight of prisoners sentenced to death and their loved ones," she said during the song’s launch ceremony last night.
She said she hoped this project would raise further awareness about the need to abolish the death penalty, an act that is considered cruel and inhumane.
Angelia, who is also Pannir's younger sister, added that she hoped it would change the public’s perception of death row inmates as criminals who have not contributed to the community.
"Despite serving seven years of his sentence, Pannir has never given up or been disappointed. With his creativity, deep interest in music and love for his homeland, Malaysia still remains thriving.
"The result of that spirit led to lyrics of the song Bukan Sekadar Hikayat and Saint TFC is the right person to sing the song," she commented.
Therefore, Angelia said, the launch of the song and music video marked a significant level of achievement by Sebaran Kasih as an NGO that has fought for the rights of prisoners under the death penalty in the Asian region.
The song Bukan Sekadar Hikayat will be officially launched on Sept 16 and be available for public streaming on Youtube and other music streaming platforms.
Angelia called on all Malaysians to give their support to the song as well as support for Pannir by signing the petition for his release from the death penalty.
