Malaysiakini pieces on the 2020 Sabah elections bagged two regional awards today.
Malaysiakini won both the Best Feature Story and Best Data Journalism awards at the 2021 Excellence in Election Reporting in Southeast Asia (Excel) Award.
The competition was hosted by the Nusantara Association for Media Development (PPMN) and had entries from Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Myanmar.
For the Best Feature Story, it was Malaysiakini's Ng Xiang Yi's reporting about a village in Keningau that was offering a lifetime of votes in exchange for a tarred road that caught the judges' attention.
The villagers from Kampung Tonobon Baru had put up a signboard that read "ada aspal ada undi" (where there is a tarred road, there are votes) - in a gambit to improve the six kilometre-journey through dirt and gravel roads into their village.
Meanwhile, Kini News Lab's Kiniguide and The Who's Who in the Sabah polls won the Best Data Journalism award.
The microsites gave readers an in-depth look into the politics of Sabah, and the constituencies and major players involved in the state election.
The Excel Awards 2021 was judged by a panel of five veteran journalists and media experts, namely Kuek Ser Kuang Keng (Malaysia), Tess Bacalla (the Philippines), Pravit Rojanaphiruk (Thailand), Hermien Y Kleden (Indonesia), and Cherian George (Singapore).
Kuek Ser, a former Malaysiakini journalist, abstained from judging all Malaysiakini entries.
