DOE rejects Kuala Nerus sea reclamation project

The proposed sea reclamation in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu has been rejected by the Department of Environment (DOE).
DOE director-general Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the proposed reclamation and capital dredging for the Sunrise City mixed development was submitted on Aug 30, 2019.
He added that it went on public display from Sept 17 to Oct 16, 2019.
"Based on the meeting of the EIA technical evaluation committee comprising federal and state agencies, as well as experts and non-governmental organisations, it decided that the EIA not be approved.
"The EIA report did not comply with the development and physical planning approved by the authorities," Wan Abdul Latiff said in a statement last night.
He added that the EIA also did not comply with guidelines set out for impact assessment and mitigation under Section 34A(2C) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974.
"To date, the DOE has yet to receive a new EIA report about the proposed development," Wan Abdul Latiff added.
The Kuala Nerus reclamation project was first highlighted by Persatuan Aktivis Sahabat Alam.
Kuala Nerus MP Khairuddin Aman Razali subsequently said he noted the objections and assured that the Terengganu government did not agree to the project.
