The Election Commission (EC) is set to meet on the upcoming Malacca polls, following yesterday’s dissolution of the state legislative assembly.
Its secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak said the commission was officially notified of the dissolution on Oct 4.
“Pursuant to Clause (4) of Article 19 of the Malacca state constitution, a general election must be held within 60 days from the date of dissolution of the assembly.
“Therefore, the EC will convene a special meeting to discuss the implementation of the election,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Ikmalrudin (above) added that the date of the meeting would be announced later.
Yesterday, Malacca Governor Mohd Ali Rustam made the decision to dissolve the state assembly, paving the way for a snap election.
Malacca had been thrown into turmoil after four state lawmakers led by Sungai Udang assemblyperson Idris Haron withdrew support from the BN-Perikatan Nasional government.
The other three were Nor Azman Hassan (Umno-Pantai Kundor), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Bersatu-Telok Mas) and Norhizam Hassan Baktee (Independent-Pengkalan Batu).
SOPs will be in place
The Malacca assembly has 28 seats. The BN-led Malacca government was represented by 17 assemblypersons, comprising 14 from Umno, two from Bersatu and one BN-friendly Independent, while the opposition has 11 seats - seven from DAP, and two each from PKR and Amanah.
Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob assured that in the event of a snap election, strict Covid-19 standard operating procedures will be in place.
This is to avoid a repeat of the Covid-19 resurgence following last year's Sabah election.
As of Monday, 88.2 percent of Malacca's adult population has been fully vaccinated.
