MALACCA POLLS | Perikatan Nasional is contesting in all 28 seats in the Malacca state election, setting the stage for three-cornered fights across the state.
Interestingly, PAS - which had been adamant in trying to forge a truce between Umno and PN - will be fighting against their Muafakat Nasional partner in 7 seats.
The PAS-Umno clashes will occur in Kuala Linggi, Taboh Naning, Durian Tunggal, Bukit Katil, Duyong, Serkam, and Merlimau.
PAS is also contesting in an 8th seat, Klebang, where MCA is fielding a candidate.
Bersatu, meanwhile, will contest in 15 seats, of which 12 are against Umno.
Of note, Bersatu Malacca chief Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen is moving from his Paya Rumput seat which he won with a 4,259 vote majority to Telok Mas.
Bersatu had won Telok Mas in 2018 with 1,288 votes. Its incumbent Noor Effandi Ahmad had been sacked by the party after defecting from the Malacca state government.
Meanwhile, deputy de facto Law Minister Mas Ermieyati Samsudin will be fielded in Tanjong Bidara, setting up a contest against state Umno chief Ab Rauf Yusoh.
Gerakan gets 5 seats under PN
The remaining five state seats will be contested by candidates from Gerakan.
The former BN component only fielded one candidate in GE14 and this time has notably given up its traditional Pengkalan Batu seat, which it last won in 2004 when the seat was still named Bachang, to Bersatu's Azrudin Md Idris.
PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin in announcing the candidates said 43 percent of the candidates fielded are below 40-years-old, reflecting a recognition for youths.
Among PN component leaders present during the candidates' announcement function held at a hotel in Shah Alam include Gerakan president Dominic Lau, PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Moktar and PAS election director Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
Nomination day is on Monday (Nov 8) and polling day is on Nov 20.
