Bersatu Segambut division chief Mahathir Mohd Rais said this is because the country will experience high inflation without effective price control, which will in turn burden the people in the future.
“The continuous increase in the price of goods in recent years will cause the consumer price index and inflation rate to rise sharply.
“The situation has a huge impact on the lives of the people, especially the low-income B40 group and those in poverty," he said in a statement today.
The government, he said, should be committed to addressing the worrying price hike of goods.
“Acts such as the Price Control And Anti-Profiteering Act should be reviewed and updated by the government,” he added.
Based on monitoring done, Mahathir said among the items that recorded the most significant price increase was the round cabbage, which he claimed had been raised from RM4 to RM6 per kilogram.
Green chillies had also shot up in prices, from RM10 to RM14 per kilogram, he said.
He also claimed there were reports that prices for motorcycle spare parts have gone up by 20 to 30 percent over the past few days.
“Who is to blame and take responsibility for the misery of the people bearing the burden of the ever-increasing cost of living?” he asked.
The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry does not seem to be playing its role in ensuring that the prices of goods are in line with set prices, he lamented.
Mahathir further questioned what other policies or initiatives the government is taking to keep the rising prices of goods and services in check.
“Determination and enforcement by the government on essential goods, especially for controlled goods, must be carried out periodically to ensure that the price of goods is still within the purchase price range of the people," he said.
