Over 14,000 flood victims evacuated, Pahang and Selangor worst hit

More than 14,000 flood victims are at temporary evacuation centres (PPS) with Pahang registering the highest number of victims at 5,189 this morning and Selangor having 4,596 people in shelters.

According to the Social Welfare Department, seven districts in Pahang, namely Raub, Lipis, Bentong, Jerantut, Maran, Kuantan and Pekan were hit by floods with 116 PPS opened as of 9am today.

Bernama reported that floods also caused the East Coast Expressway Phase 1 (LPT1) route to be closed in both directions involving KM113.4, KM84.6, KM198.7 and KM74.4 after being inundated while only heavy vehicles were allowed through KM75.1.

The concessionaire of the highway, Anih Bhd, announced that KM66.4 to KM66.1 towards Kuala Lumpur is still closed for cleaning work due to mud floods, apart from the landslide incident which caused KM67.8 and KM69.5 to be off-limits for all vehicles on the way to the capital.

Continuous rain caused readings at 19 river stations in Pahang to exceed the danger level, including Sungai Jelai in Lipis, Sungai Tembeling (Jerantut), Sungai Bentong (Bentong), Sungai Semantan (Temerloh), Sungai Pahang (Temerloh), Sungai Lembing and Sungai Belat in Kuantan.

The Meteorological Department predicts dangerous continuous heavy rain in Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong and Kuantan today, while Temerloh, Maran and Pekan are expected to be hit by continuous bad levels of heavy rain.

Several roads closed in Klang Valley 

In Selangor, the state contingent police headquarters informed that several roads were closed for vehicles in some areas following the floods. 

The roads are under the supervision of the Petaling Jaya, North Klang, Sungai Buloh, Subang Jaya, Kuala Langat, Sepang and Shah Alam District Police Headquarters areas.

Meanwhile, the Social Welfare Department said that 4,596 people were evacuated as of 7am, involving the opening of 55 PPS.

Kelantan rivers rising

In Kelantan, flood victims continued to increase as of 8am, with 3,652 people from 826 families housed in 44 PPS.

Kelantan Civil Defense Force (APM) Disaster Management and Operations Division officer Mohd Hanif Omar said 21 PPS were opened in Kuala Krai, 15 in Gua Musang, four in Jeli and two each in Tanah Merah and Pasir Mas.

The official eBanjir Kelantan portal reported that five major rivers in Kelantan were at dangerous levels, namely Sungai Kelantan at Tangga Krai, Kuala Krai which recorded a reading of 27.06m, Sungai Kelantan at Guillemard Bridge (16.94m), Sungai Lebir at Tualang (36.59m) , Sungai Golok in Jenob, Tanah Merah (24.01m) and Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas (10.04m).

In Terengganu, the number of flood victims in the state increased slightly to 261 people from 88 families as of 9am. 

The Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said in a statement that Dungun is the only district hit by the floods with three PPS operating.

In Malacca, the number of flood victims in the state increased to 563 people from 112 families involving the districts of Alor Gajah and Melaka Tengah.
