PKR calls for special Parliament sitting to address causes of floods
PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution has called on the government to convene a special Parliament sitting to address the various causes that had contributed to the flash floods which have devastated communities, particularly in the Greater Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang.
"The unrelenting rain followed by landslides and major floods reminds us that climate change is real and carries impacts that are beyond expectations of experts or the government.
"Looking at the flowing mud, it is evidence that our hills are being eroded and rivers becoming shallower...
PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution has called on the government to convene a special Parliament sitting to address the various causes that had contributed to the flash floods which have devastated communities, particularly in the Greater Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang.
"The unrelenting rain followed by landslides and major floods reminds us that climate change is real and carries impacts that are beyond expectations of experts or the government.
"Looking at the flowing mud, it is evidence that our hills are being eroded and rivers becoming shallower – all due to uncontrollable human activity that will court disaster," he said in a statement.
In light of these developments, he said the government, private sector and NGOs must be more serious in implementing the principles of Environmental Social Governance (ESG).
"Therefore, Malaysia must not fall behind and Parliament must immediately look into all laws related to the environment, river maintenance and sustainable urban development that are forward-looking.
"I urge for a special Parliament sitting to discuss issues related to the floods and the government's preparedness in the interest of Keluarga Malaysia that have been deeply impacted," he said.
He noted that that the poor coordination had led to poor disaster response.
"This should serve as a lesson to us," he said.
The Dewan Rakyat sitting had adjourned on Monday (Dec 20) without a debate on the floods that at their peak, displaced more than 60,000 people.
