Covid-19 (Feb 9): 17,134 cases, highest since Sept 17 last year
COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 17,134 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the cumulative infections to 2,956,332.
The fresh infections today is the highest in 145 days, since Sep 17, 2021.
The new cases comprised 16,674 Malaysians (97.3 percent) and 460 non-citizens (2.7 percent).

The new cases comprised 16,674 Malaysians (97.3 percent) and 460 non-citizens (2.7 percent).
They were more than the number of Covid-19 patients who recovered, which totalled 5,681. This is expected to increase the number of active cases.
A total of 130 cases (0.8 percent) were imported while the remaining 17,004 (99.2 percent) were domestic transmissions.
As of yesterday, the national infectvity rate (R number) stood at 1.39. The value must be kept under 1.0 to prevent an exponential spread of the virus.
The states with an infectivity rate above the national average are Sarawak (1.68), Perlis (1.65), Sabah (1.59), Labuan (1.51) and Terengganu (1.4).
The Health Ministry will only publish today's breakdown of new cases by states after midnight on its CovidNow portal.
The breakdown by states for yesterday (Feb 8), where 13,944 new cases were reported, is as follow:

The 141 cases in Putrajaya yesterday is a record-high for the federal territory.
At present, 143 Covid-19 patients are in the intensive care unit of which 78 are unable to breathe on their own and have been intubated.
This is an increase of 27.7 percent compared to the 112 Covid-19 patients in the intensive care unit a week ago.
To date, 385 Covid-19 clusters are still active, including 15 new clusters reported today.
The ongoing clusters have seen an increase of 19.6 percent from the 322 active clusters a week ago.
