Indonesia's Meteorology Department reported that a magnitude 6.2 earthquake was detected near Bukittinggi at about 8.39am local time (9.39am Malaysia time).
The department said there was no tsunami risk.
According to the Malaysia Meteorological Department, besides the Klang Valley, tremors were also felt in Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca and Johor.
Several high rise buildings were reported to have evacuated their occupants - including the Bernama headquarters in Kuala Lumpur - when the tremors hit.
Indonesian media is reporting that buildings in the western Sumatra area have suffered damage due to the earthquake.
Later in the evening, the Indonesian National Board for Disaster Management said at least seven people were killed and 85 injured in the earthquake.
