Two celebrities are expected to ramp things up in the forthcoming PKR party election, particularly in its Ampang division.
According to PKR insiders, actor Hans Isaac and rapper Altimet have signed up to run for the Ampang division chief post, a seat that was once held by Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin before she defected from PKR and joined Bersatu.
Hans (above, right) and Altimet, whose real name is Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman, are expected to face six others, including the incumbent division chief Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin.
Based on a list of contenders for the seat sighted by Malaysiakini, the other five who have been nominated for the post are Abdullah Md Zain, Sam Hoo Wai, Abdul Halim Mohamed Yusof, Daing Muhammad Reduan Bachok and Abdul Latif Shaari.
The list is not final, as the PKR election nomination period for branches is only scheduled to end at midnight today.
Hans, 51, joined PKR in 2020 and it was previously speculated that he would contest in the Ampang parliamentary constituency in the 15th general election.
Altimet, 43, joined the party in April last year, together with a fellow entertainer Afdlin Shauki.
Hot seat
Malaysiakini has sent requests to the aides of both Hans and Altimet to get comments on their candidacy and political ambitions.
Zuraida won the Ampang PKR division chief post uncontested in the 2018 party election. She also won the PKR vice-president post in that same election.
However, Zuraida left PKR in 2020, at the time she and several other politicians took part in a political coup dubbed the Sheraton Move. This led to the collapse of the then Pakatan Harapan government.
The PKR Ampang division was later hit by another controversy when more than 200 members announced they were quitting to follow Zuraida and back the Perikatan Nasional government.
This will be PKR’s first party election since the Sheraton Move.
More than 1.2 million party members are eligible to vote online or physically in the election that is scheduled to be held from May 13 to 18.
