Price control for chicken and eggs will be extended until the end of this month, said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.

This, he said, was decided by the cabinet yesterday. The price control was supposed to end on June 5.

The government had set an RM8.9 per kg price ceiling for "standard" dressed chicken and RM9.9 per kg for "super" dressed chicken between Feb 5 and June 5.

Egg prices were pegged at 43 sen per egg for Grade A, followed by 41 sen per egg for Grade B and 39 sen per egg for Grade C.

According to The Star, Putrajaya was studying proposals to channel subsidies to target groups in lieu of price control.

"As a concerned government, the Finance Ministry will look into the proposal for subsidies to be given to target groups and those in the low-income bracket.

"The study will include the subsidy rate and the right mechanism to channel the aid to tackle the increase in prices when the maximum ceiling price scheme ends," Alexander said.

At 145 days, the price control for chicken and eggs was the longest in Malaysian history.

The price of poultry had risen since last year as the cost of production had increased, mostly due to pricier grain feed which is mostly imported.
