Former Harakah chief editor Ahmad Lutfi Othman dies
Editor and writer Ahmad Lutfi Othman died early this morning in hospital where he was being treated for various health complications.
On Facebook, Lutfi’s wife Siti Hawa Samsam said he died at 2.10am at the UiTM Puncak Alam Hospital, several hours after turning 59.

Editor and writer Ahmad Lutfi Othman died early this morning in hospital where he was being treated for various health complications.
On Facebook, Lutfi’s wife Siti Hawa Samsam said he died at 2.10am at the UiTM Puncak Alam Hospital, several hours after turning 59.
A journalist and editor for more than three decades, tributes and condolences for the Kedah native described Lutfi’s writings as a key voice during Malaysia’s Reformasi years.
Lutfi was most known for his role as chief editor of PAS’ news organ Harakah, first leading the publication from 1987 to 1992 and from 2006 to 2015. He then joined Malaysia Dateline, Amanah’s mouthpiece.
During his years away from Harakah, the former ISA detainee was credited as an author of various books and articles on Malaysian politics, published despite a repressive media landscape that saw one of his bi-monthly magazines banned by the Home Ministry.
Lutfi’s fight for a free press also saw the setting-up of ‘Kumpulan Aktivis Media Independen’ (Kami) with other like-minded individuals.
In 2016, Lutfi published one of his last major works - ‘Lorong Sunyi Media Bebas’ - a compilation of 24 personal writings and 54 articles written about him by others including veteran editors and his son, Ahmad Luqman Hakim.
