A man, who allegedly insulted Islam in a video that went viral on social media, has been remanded for four days.
He was arrested in his home in Puchong, Selangor yesterday, and will be held at the Dang Wangi district police station lock-up until July 21.
The food delivery rider, 39, is investigated under Section 298A of the Penal Code for causing disharmony based on religion.
The 36-second video, in which he allegedly insulted Allah, Prophet Muhammad and Islam, was uploaded onto Instagram.
Police also seized a mobile phone which was believed to be used to upload the video.
Police said six police reports were lodged on this issue.
Vigilante acts
Earlier, the media reported that the suspect was allegedly assaulted by a group of men over the video.
In announcing the arrest yesterday, Sepang district police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof cautioned against vigilante acts.
"We urge the public to stop speculating over the issue and let the police conduct further investigations.
"The public are urged not to take matters into their own hands to avoid any untoward incidents," he said.
This case came amid public outcry over a stand-up comedy performance which also allegedly insulted Islam.
The performer, Siti Nuramira Abdullah, last Wednesday pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing disharmony during her performance at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur.
The club's co-founder Rizal Van Geyzel was last week also remanded for one day and being investigated for sedition, over two video clips of his older performances which went viral, amid following public attention on the Siti Nuramira case.
