Stand-up comedy case: RM40,000 raised for couple's bail

Rights group Lawyers for Liberty has succeeded in crowdfunding RM40,000 as bail money for a woman charged with insulting Islam in a stand-up comedy skit, and her boyfriend.
According to Siti Nuramira Abdullah’s lawyer, any additional amount raised will be returned to the contributors.
"We have reached RM40,000 already so whatever monies that come after that today, we will refund to the rightful owner provided they give us the details," R Sivaraj said in a note to reporters this morning.
However, Siti Nuramira (above, right) and Alexander Navin Vijayachandran may not be able to post bail today, the lawyer said, depending on whether the court will be able to process it in time.
"Given that both these people are in Beranang or Kuala Kubu Bharu, we are not sure (if they will be released) today or tomorrow. But as to the question of bailor or bail sum, both have been secured as of this morning," he added.
Charged with causing disharmony
Siti Nuramira last Wednesday pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing disharmony among the Muslim community during her performance at Crackhouse Comedy Club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur on June 4.
She was charged under Section 298A of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of no less than two years and not more than five years in jail.
Sessions Court judge Siti Aminah Ghazali granted her bail of RM20,000 with one surety.
She had among others started her performance dressed in a baju kurung and headscarf, but stripped down to more revealing clothes mid-performance.
On the same day, Alexander pleaded not guilty to two counts of uploading insulting content on social media.
He was charged with uploading content with the intention to insult other people, on Instagram on June 5 and Youtube on June 16, respectively.
Sessions Court judge Azrul Darus allowed him bail of RM20,000 in one surety and fixed Sept 1 for case mention.
Comedy club co-founder under probe
On June 15, Crackhouse Comedy Club co-founder Rizal Van Geyzel was remanded for one day and is under probe for sedition.
The 39-year-old was arrested after presenting himself to the Dang Wangi Police Station to assist in investigations into two video clips of his performance at the comedy club, where he had allegedly touched on racial sensitivities.
He is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for issuing statements that have a seditious tendency and under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for allegedly abusing network facilities.
